This week we are going to do three things -
- Continue working on the drug project research questions
- Label and define the parts of a nerve cell
- Learn the basics for how to write an MLA format essay
Remember, I would like for your research notes to be done by the end of your second class with me this week. You should be writing your essay and have a thoughtful, well-edited first draft to turn in to me next week if you hope to stay on track to reach Level 3.
Please see last week's post if you are unsure what to do for the Drug Project.
Hello Advisees!
Don't forget we are going to have a yummy food day on Thursday during our lunch period. Sign ups will be on Tuesday during advisory, so think about what you would like to make and bring for our Thursday shin-dig.
Thanks!
This week I will have Koa and Ulu on Wednesday, and Ohia and Kukui on Thursday for Projects class.
In projects class you will choose the drug you are going to research this quarter and you will be begin working on the research questions.
- Read through the Drug Project Introduction Page. The first thing you need to do really well is complete thorough research notes. Make sure you are writing down your sources as you take your notes because you will need them to do your MLA bibliography (Works Cited page). If you take thorough notes, the rest of the project will be much easier for you.
- Once you have good notes, you will need to write your MLA format essay. Here is the rubric for the essay - Drug Project MLA Essay Rubric.
- When your essay is complete and approved by me, you will be able to move on to the 3 minute presentation. Here is the rubric for that - Drug Project Presentation Rubric.
- Once both your essay and your presentation are complete and approved by me, then you will be able to move on to the Glogster poster. Here is the rubric for the Glogster poster - Drug Project Glogster Rubric.
Use the Drug Projects Timeline to help keep yourself on track. We will do our best to stick to this timeline throughout the quarter.
I'm sure it seems a bit overwhelming to see the project all at once. Don't worry. We will take it step by step and if you stay on track you will have plenty of time to get things done. (However, if you get behind, it will be very hard for you to compete this, so don't get behind.)
The first thing you should focus on are your research notes. Like I said above, make them thorough and write down your sources.
This week I will only see Kukui and Ohia for Health class.
In Health class we will go over the parts of a nerve cell. You will label a drawing of a nerve cell and explain what each part does. For some of you this will be a little bit of review. For others, this information will be brand new.
The purpose of learning the parts of the nerve cell is so we learn how our brain works. Once we know a little bit about the brain, we will learn how drugs impact the brain.
This week in Health class we are going to begin talking about how substances impact our bodies, brains, and society. This is going to be the ongoing theme for both Health and Projects class for the quarter.
We will begin by discussing/completing the following:
- Legal and illegal substances
- Statistics on the use and abuse of legal and illegal substances in Hawaii
- Begin the process of choosing the substance you are going to research for the quarter
